1982 Black Stratocaster

This is a 1982 Fender Standard Stratocaster that I bought in May, 2007. It has an Alder body, Maple neck and Rosewood fingerboard. Also came with the original case (OHSC).

This is what many refer to as the "Smith" Strat, to distinguish it from the Stratocasters made immediately before and after it. Dan Smith was the director of marketing at Fender who implemented the design of the Standard Stratocaster. Compared to its predecessors, the Smith Strat has a smaller headstock, 4 bolt neck, body end truss rod adjustment (no bullet) and the X-1 bridge pickup.
This design is the precursor to the 1987 American Standard Stratocaster .

2007 Dallas Guitar Show Review

Went to the Dallas Guitar Show on Saturday. Lots and lots of guitars and accessories. The best booth I saw was H.I. Guitars out of Japan. The guy had dozens of vintage Gibsons and Fenders. The coolest part was his collection of 1963 and '64 Sea Foam Green Fenders enclosed in a glass case.

I was looking for a late '70s Fender Stratocaster. Most of the ones I saw were of medium to poor quality. Most of them also had poorly done re-finish jobs done to them. On one in particular, the clear coat had noticeably run on the top of the frets. A 1979 Strat had such thick clear that you couldn't feel the headstock decal.

The biggest problem at this show was the prices exhibitors were asking. For example, a beat up 1974 Stratocaster was being offered for $15,000. The Vintage Guitar Price Guide has this listed for $5,000 - $7,000 in excellent condition!

In another booth, I saw two 1964 Fender Deluxe Reverb amps for $2,500 each. Again, the Price Guide has these in the $2,100-$2,200 range.

My wife got the guy to come down to $1,500 on the Strat with the bad headstock decal, but he didn't have the original case, so we passed.

I saw one purchase actually take place, a guy bought a 1954 Telecaster for $10,000!!!

If this show is any indication, then prices are already way up over what's in the Price Guide, at least asking prices. But, if there wasn't alot of purchasing going on, then maybe the sellers will come down to what was prerceived as normal prices.
